The Sky House In Ghana

A Group Home for Young Adults with Disabilities

The First Campaign

The Sky House is The Sky Is My Limit’s first campaign. The planning and fundraising began in 2012 with the goal of developing land and constructing a building to host young adults living with mental and physical disabilities in Ghana. A group home with a purpose, The Sky House opened on January 25th, 2018, as the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan West Africa.

The land and building both serve as the home base for our vision and mission in Ghana. The building itself serves to house our residents, providing them with living spaces and working spaces. The land provides them with the means to farm their own food. Combined, The Sky House provides the environment for young adults living with disabilities to grow and thrive as individuals.

The Sky House as sustainable

The Sky Is My Limit is working towards making The Sky House entirely sustainable on its own. The sale of the residents’ Kente products and the vegetables they grow on the land will go a long way towards realizing this, but so will growing the project’s scope and reach: the more residents we can support, the stronger The Sky House will be on its own.

Set up for transitional living, our residents acquire the skills and confidence to live in the community by residing with us. Working with the community, graduates are placed with local businesses as apprentices, and we remain connected to them throughout their journey. The support remains for them after their time with us because the success of this campaign depends on the network throughout the Volta Region and Ghana we can create.

The larger the network, the more sustainable the campaign.

Home Sweet Home

By establishing a respectful residence in cooperation with local chiefs, schools, and opinion leaders, as well as our own directors, the success we had been building towards arrived in 2018. After opening The Sky House early that year, we rapidly went from 4 to 8 to 11 residents. The growth and effect we have had on both the residents living at The Sky House, and also those in the surrounding community, has been substantial.

Visit The Sky House, and you will see our residents busy at work (view The Sky House Gallery here!). Whether they are completing daily house duties or working on local craft (check out our residents’ craft products for sale here!), the residents keep themselves working – and they are paid to do so!

Each one of our residents are paid commensurate salaries for their work. A large portion of the sponsorship money from this campaign goes towards this payment, along with purchasing the materials for their crafts and farming pursuits.

Sponsor The Sky House

It was only with the help of donors that we were able to provide such an incredible place for young adults to live and learn in. A place that affirms the productivity and dignity of people with cognitive and/or physical challenges. A place that helps them grow. A place that is itself growing, and, with our donors’ continued support, will continue to grow, and help grow young Ghanains living with mental and/or physical disabilities.

Your donation to The Sky Is My Limit goes towards making The Sky House sustainable, by expanding its reach. It pays the residents for their work, providing them with a sense of dignity in their accomplishments. It purchases farming tools; it purchases materials for Kente weaving. It provides a young Ghanaian living the mental or physical disabilities the opportunity to live with a sense of pride and purpose.

The Sky House: a beautiful template for joy and empowerment.
